A brief retelling of this book will help the student to remember the main events from the work in order to successfully complete all the tasks in the literature.
(641 words) In July 1864, the crew of the Duncan yacht caught hammerhead fish in the sea. There is a bottle with a note in it that says that Captain Grant and two of his sailors survived the wreck of the Britannia ship and are waiting for help. Lord Edward Glenarvan, the owner of the yacht, and his wife, Lady Helen, decide to set off in search of the captain. The British authorities refuse to help them in the search, so they take with them on an expedition the children of Captain Grant: sixteen-year-old Mary and twelve-year-old Robert. Together with them go in search of the captain of the Duncan John Mangles, his friend John Austin, a cousin of Glenarvan McNabbs and the whole crew of the yacht.
Travelers do not know the exact location of the grant, since the coordinates on the paper were blurred by water. They suggested that the captain might be in Patagonia. Only after sailing offshore, the team finds in the cabin Jacques Paganel, a member of the Geographical Society. He intended to sail to India and decided to fall asleep in advance on the ship to make it easier to move the pitching, but he confused the ship in distraction. Upon learning of the mission of Glenarvan, Paganel agreed to go with him.
When the Duncan approached the shores of Patagonia, the travelers decided that the captain, along with the women, would remain on the ship and lead him to the east coast, while the men checked the land and reached the meeting point on foot. The land part of their journey was full of dangers. At first, Robert Grant disappeared, and from the clutches of a giant condor he was saved by a native Talcava, who will become a faithful ally of the expedition. Then the travelers were attacked by a pack of wolves, but thanks to Robert's courage, the danger passed. And after that, misfortune overtook them: travelers had to climb a tall tree to survive the flood, but the hurricane uprooted it. Fortunately, the trunk served as a good raft, and travelers were able to escape.
Paganel suggested that they misunderstood the meaning of the coordinates, and to look for captain Grant is not in Patagonia, but in Australia. The team agrees with him, and everyone returns aboard the Duncan to continue sailing.
On the Australian coast, Glenarvan meets a kind Irishman who would be happy to help their search, but did not hear anything about Captain Grant. Then his servant Ayrton intervenes in the conversation. He says he was a sailor on Britain, and at the time of the shipwreck he was the last to see Grant. Ayrton claims that the captain is alive, and you need to look for him on the west coast, and not the east, where Glenarvan kept his way. The sailor promises to be the conductor of the expedition, and the travelers go on the road, leaving several crew members on the ship.
The journey through Australia was enjoyable until the travelers witnessed a terrible picture of a train crash on Camden Bridge. Smoke, blood, disfigured bodies shock them. This is said to be the work of a gang of escaped convicts led by Ben Joyce.
During one of the night camps, McNabbs accidentally overheard the secret conversation of their guide. It turns out that Ayrton is actually the very Ben Joyce, and he leads travelers into a trap in order to take possession of the Glenarvan yacht himself. The major reveals his vile plan, and the convict has to flee, but before that he seriously wounds Glenarvan’s hand. The Lord decides to write a letter to Duncan to warn the team, but since he cannot write, Paganel does it for him. Alas, the band of robbers intercepts the letter, and the "Duncan" passes into their possession.
Travelers understand that they have lost their last hope for luck. They decide to get to New Zealand to board the ship from there and return home. On the way they are overtaken by a tribe of cannibals, from which they do not hope to leave. But here the Duncan team comes to the rescue. It turns out that the absent-minded Paganel mixed up Australia and New Zealand in a letter, and the team had to capture Joyce, who wanted to take a different course and therefore tried to rebel. The captive asks Glenarvan to land him on a deserted island in the ocean. When the "Duncan" approaches the shore of a suitable island, the team understands that it was here that Captain Grant with two sailors was waiting for them all this time. Glenarvan leaves Joyce alone on the island, promising one day to return for him.
Captain Grant returns home with everyone. His daughter Mary marries Captain John Mangles, Paganel proposes to a cousin of McNabbs, and young Robert studies at the Maritime College in order to one day become as great and brave a sailor as his father.
